A new ballot will feature the maned wolf and should go into circulation at the end of August. No images of the note have yet been released.
The Central Bank announced on Wednesday (07/29) the launch of the 200 reais note, which has already been approved by the National Monetary Council (CMN). The ballot will feature the maned wolf.
The Central Bank did not release images of the new note, which is expected to go into circulation at the end of August. In 2020, 450 million banknotes of 200 reais will be printed.
The last release of a note made in the country was in 2002, when the 20 reais banknote came into circulation. Currently, there are six types of banknotes: 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 reais.
According to the Central Bank's administration director, Carolina de Assis Barros, with the launch of the new note, the institution acts preventively to a possible increase in the population's demand for paper money.
According to Barros, with the covid-19 pandemic, the number of banknotes in circulation has decreased, with more people saving money at home. "We are experiencing a period of hoarding, an effect derived from the pandemic. The Central Bank at this moment is unable to specify how long the hoarding effects should last," said Barros.
The director also pointed out that the printing of new bills is not related to inflation and added that there is no shortage of cash in the market. Barros stressed that, given the possibility of increased demand, the Central Bank considered the opportune moment for the launch of the new note.
The new note of 200 reais is still in the final stage of printing tests. Only after this period, images of the ballot will be released.
